Opening reception & artist talk: Thursday March 3rd, 5:30 pm
At the Atelier Circulaire Gallery (Suite 105)

Atelier Circulaire is pleased to present the exhibition Fluid Fields: Landscapes in the Approaching Present by Sean Caulfield. Join us on Thursday, March 3rd, at 5:30 pm at the Atelier Circulaire Gallery for an artist talk and the opening of this exhibition, which will continue until April 9th, 2016.

Sean Caulfield’s creative research explores the impact of technology on the environment and our bodies by means of prints, drawings, installations and artist’s books. Through his works, the artist blurs the boundaries between the biological and the technological, between the organic and the mechanical. With this exhibition of large woodcuts, he forces the visitor to address the multiple aspects of these combinations, always in mutation and metamorphosis. The exhibition offers references to the universe of biology, science fiction, mythology and religion, and his works are also inspired by the aesthetics of old scientific illustrations. Both figurative and abstract at the same time, the images give way to an open interpretation, only slightly guided. Caulfield's works present to the viewer a juxtaposition of temporality and a new relationship with the greatly changed natural world.

Sean Caulfield is a Centennial Professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta. He has exhibited his prints, drawings and artist’s books in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan. Caulfield has received numerous scholarships and awards and his work is in many public and private collections including those of the Houghton Library of Harvard University (USA), the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge (UK) and Blanton Museum of Art of the University of Texas at Austin (USA).

Founded in 1982, Atelier Circulaire is an artist-run centre dedicated to the creation, research, production and promotion of printmaking. Atelier Circulaire supports the work of contemporary print-based artists by encouraging the use of traditional techniques and new technologies.
