The PRINT Show 2014 opened at Toronto's John B. Aird Gallery on Thursday, May 1 and once again presents an outstanding collection of exceptional artworks by contemporary printmakers. This year, 45 artists responded to the Gallery's Call For Entry, submitting 91 prints for two jurors to consider. This years jurors were Ed Phillips and Dale Barrett. Ed Phillips is an independent arts advisor specializing in collections management, acquisitions and divestitures, educational tours and art appraisal for corporate and private clients. For over 29 years he was the consulting Curator/Manager of the Ernst & Young Art Collection, a private collection of over 4,000 historical & contemporary Canadian original prints and since 1986, he has been a Volunteer Educator at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Dale Barrett is an independent curator, art gallery administrator and graphic designer. He has worked in the art gallery sector for over 30 years, holding positions at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Oakville Galleries, Inter/Access Electronic Media Art Centre, The Craft Gallery, the Ontario Crafts Council and Prime Gallery.
Prints by the following artists were selected for the exhibition: Sally Ayre, Carlina Chen, Victoria Cowan, Robert Creighton, Louis Roy Crout, Pamela Dodds, Nelrene Dunleavy, Susan Fothergill, Phyllis Gordon, Rose Hirano, Lucie Jolicoeur Côté, Jae Lee, John-Ming Mark, Ann McCall, Liz Menard, Deborah Moore, Kurt Pammer, Laura Peturson, Walter Procska, Robert Quance, David Whiteside, Laura Widmer, Megan Winsley, Laurie Zinkand-Selles.
Five awards were announced and handed out on May 1st, 2014. First Prize was awarded to Hamilton, ON artist Robert Creighton for his lithograph on mylar print entitled "Derby Girl". The Second Prize was awarded to Lucie Jolicoeur Côté of Outremont, Quebec for her a copper plate etching entitled "Liberazione". Third Prize went to Liz Menard of Toronto, ON for her work "Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria)", a mixed media etching and Chine-collé print on Gampi paper that also incorporates handstitched French knots and pastel. Two Honorable Mentions were awarded in the form of gift certificates. The Curry's Art Store Award was given to Laura Peturson of Calandar, ON for a woodcut/screenprint entitled "The Settling After the Storm". The Japanese Paper Place Award was given to Jae Lee of Toronto, ON for a seven colour lithograph entitled "Freesia and I".
The PRINT Show 2014 is on view until Friday, May 23.
